Careertipset

Frequently asked questions

Quick, sourced answers to the questions readers ask us most.

What is Careertipset?

Careertipset is an independent career guidance publication. We publish practical, sourced guides on job searching, resumes and cover letters, interviews, salary negotiation, career growth and how AI is changing work. Every guide states its sources and when it was last updated.

Is Careertipset free to read?

Yes. Every guide, case study and statistic on Careertipset is free to read, with no account or sign up required.

How long does it take to find a job?

It varies a lot by field, seniority and location. As a reference point, the median unemployed person in the United States had been looking for 11.9 weeks in October 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. See our guide How long does it take to find a job? for the full breakdown.

Do applicant tracking systems automatically reject resumes?

Usually not on their own. An applicant tracking system (ATS) stores and parses applications so recruiters can search and filter them, and most recruiters filter by skills from the job description. The practical goal is a resume that parses cleanly and clearly shows the skills the posting asks for. Read How to write an ATS friendly resume.

Should I always negotiate a job offer?

In most cases asking politely is low risk and often worthwhile. In ZipRecruiter's Q4 2025 survey of new hires, about 90% of those who negotiated got a better deal, yet only 30.4% negotiated at all. Our salary negotiation guide explains how to do it well.

Who writes Careertipset guides?

Guides are researched and written by the Careertipset editorial team and checked against primary sources such as government statistics releases, peer reviewed research and named industry surveys. Read our editorial policy for how we research, fact check and update content.

How often is the advice updated?

We review guides when the underlying data changes, for example when the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a new release. Each guide shows its publication date and last updated date.

Does Careertipset accept paid placements?

No guide on Careertipset is paid for by an employer, recruiter or software vendor. If that ever changes for a specific page, the page will say so clearly at the top.

Can I suggest a topic or report an error?

Yes, please do. Use the contact page to suggest a topic or report a mistake. We correct verified errors and note significant corrections on the page.

Is Careertipset hiring?

Yes. We are hiring editors and career experts. See the open roles and upload your CV on our vacancies page.
